.CLUB Hacks the LAUNCH Hackathon

In addition to traditional “clubs,” we have seen quite a few innovative apps and startups use a .CLUB domain name. From TC Disrupt winner Alfred Club (Alfred.club) to hot San Francisco startup lunch service Eat Club (Eat.club) to Justin Kan’s cool EDM site TheDrop.club and many more.

With the growing popularity of membership and subscription models and monthly “box” clubs it is easy to see how a .CLUB domain is ideal for any business building a community around their product or service. With startups in mind, we took to the streets of San Francisco for the Launch Hackathon and Festival, held at the Fort Mason Center, a venue with spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. This was our first participation in a hackathon and based on the great experience we had it certainly won’t be the last.

As a well established high profile event, the Launch Hackathon attracted over 1,000 participants who formed more than 200 teams competing for a grand prize of up to a $100,000 investment in the winning project. The Top 5 Hackathon entrants were invited to present their project on the main stage during the Launch Festival, before an audience of thousands and a judging panel of VC’s and Silicon Valley luminaries. We offered every participant a free (first year) .CLUB name from Godaddy, and any team that used a .CLUB name for their Hackathon project was eligible for the .CLUB prize. Our prize was $10,000 ($5,000 cash plus a $5,000 credit toward a premium .CLUB name).

The response to .CLUB from the hackers was amazing.  53 teams used a .CLUB name for their project.  4 made it to the top 15, and 1 (GoInterview.club) made it to the top 5 and presented on the main Launch Festival stage.  The winner of our prize was BackChannel.club, who created a great way for people to connect and help each other though the “backchannel” at an event such as a Hackathon (and it was actively used at the Launch Hackathon).
